Onyx is a striking natural stone known for its beautiful banding, rich colours and incredible patterns. Depending on the material, it can display shades of black, white, cream, honey, green, brown, orange and red, with each piece revealing its own unique layers and veining.

True mineral Onyx is a banded variety of Chalcedony, part of the Quartz family, and is composed primarily of silica. Its characteristic parallel bands form as silica is deposited in layers over time. When cut and polished, these layers can create beautiful stripes, waves and contrasting patterns.

It is worth noting that the name “Onyx” is also widely used in the decorative stone trade for banded Calcite material, sometimes called Calcite Onyx or Mexican Onyx. This material can be beautifully translucent, allowing light to pass through its layers and making it particularly popular for lamps, bowls, carvings and decorative pieces. It is geologically different from true Chalcedony Onyx.

Metaphysically, Onyx is traditionally associated with grounding, protection, strength and stability. It is believed to encourage confidence, focus and resilience, particularly during times of change or challenge, and is commonly associated with the Root Chakra.
