Selenite is a transparent to translucent crystalline variety of Gypsum, named after Selene, the ancient Greek goddess of the Moon, because of its beautiful moon-like glow. 

Exceptionally clear pieces like this are often referred to as Selenite Windows because light passes beautifully through the crystal, giving it an almost window-like appearance.
