Serpentine Carved Bowl with Hippos

Beautiful Hand-Carved Serpentine Bowl with Hippos

A gorgeous handmade Serpentine bowl from Zimbabwe, featuring the cutest little hippo heads carved into the stone as though they are popping their heads up through the waters of an African river.

I absolutely love the character of this piece. The natural green tones and beautiful markings of the Serpentine work so perfectly with the carving, while the little hippos peeking out give it such a fun and unique personality.

Hand-carved in Zimbabwe, these beautiful pieces also help support local artisans and the continuation of traditional stone-carving skills that have been passed down through generations.

Serpentine is a fascinating group of magnesium silicate minerals, best known for its beautiful shades of green. Its colouring can range from pale yellow-green through to rich forest green, often with wonderful natural mottling, veining and patterns that can resemble snakeskin — which is where the name Serpentine originates.

Because Serpentine is relatively soft compared with many other stones, it lends itself beautifully to carving and has been used for centuries to create sculptures, decorative objects and jewellery.

Metaphysically, Serpentine is traditionally associated with grounding, protection and a deep connection with nature.

It is believed to encourage emotional balance and spiritual exploration and is particularly well known for its association with Kundalini energy. Serpentine is traditionally thought to help awaken and encourage the natural flow of this energy while supporting personal growth and transformation.

The hippo is also a beautiful symbol of strength, protection, emotional depth and connection to water — making these little carved heads such a lovely feature of the piece.

A truly gorgeous one-of-a-kind carving, full of natural beauty, character and Zimbabwean craftsmanship.
